Original Notes from the day: “much more rufous than images; bill thinner. almost cinnamon below, with rufous wash to crown and back. essentially unstreaked back, with very fine upper breast streaking. short, low, display flight.” Although we chased a first bird for what seemed like miles, wandering from bush to bush through the absurd beckettian landscape of the tuuyo plains, this bird is actually quite common there. The rufous plumage must be a seasonal variation. Abdi Jama pointed out that the lark plates in Birds of the Horn of Africa badly need to be redone, and are being redone for the next edition. UPDATE 5/1/24 Regarding the audio recordings below: I had originally attached them to this sighting when I discovered them while going through older audio files, but when I realized there were no other recordings in eBird and the audio slate made it clear that the bird was not actually seen vocalizing, I moved them to passerine sp. I've now moved them back: I sent a link to this recording to Gilles Willem, who was in Somaliland recording birds earlier this year, and he confirms the attached recording for Lesser Hoopoe-Lark on the discussion page for this file at Xeno-canto--link to the discussion is below in notes I am preserving from when I had this audio listed as "passerine sp." I have put brackets around the "no longer relevant" notes. Here's a link to the Xeno canto page for the species, where Gilles has now put up his recent recordings. Having heard those I'm now fully satisfied that the songs here are correctly attributed. https://xeno-canto.org/species/Alaemon-hamertoni [I have a strong suspicion the recording posted below under passerine sp. is of this species; it is clear however from the context that I did not actually see the bird vocalizing. Given that no recordings are evident of this species online and I was unable to confirm the recording with Abdi it feels prudent to leave it unattributed for now.] [Audio slated as follows: 'We think this is Lesser Hoopoe-Lark," clearly suggesting to me the bird was not observed singing. Unfortunately I am unable to confirm this is a correct identification. More background on this recording at Xeno-canto here: https://xeno-canto.org/forum/topic/59809]
