Staggering occurrence. The bird was trapped shortly after I first saw it and was aged as a 1CY male weighing 10g, in good condition, wing length 62mm. I had no camera! Reminiscent of a RB Flycatcher in shape though tail seemed larger. Dove-grey head with white orbital ring, dark bill. Mantle olive-green, remiges dark brown showing a bright yellow wing stripe extending across six innermost secondaries. Chin, throat and underparts white with a large orang-yellow patch at the shoulder just above the carpal joint of the wing. Tail showed two large yellow patches either side of the central pair of rectrices and also at the base (yellow on the four tail feathers either side of the central two). Whole of basal half of the tail appeared yellow in the field though. Legs black. When feeding it made dashes out from vegetation and back to near its original perch, yellow tail patches flashing. It was very vocal calling a loud 'chit' or 'chip' but could be very elusive at times as it disappeared into think Hawthorns. Stayed until December 5th. Two British records prior to 1982, one in Argyll on Nov 1st 1982 was the third, this was the fourth. British Birds 76(11): p525. Photographs © Tim Loseby.
