Gözlem detayları
Rare (early, but see discussion). 2 small diving waterfowl off the lookout on the north (left) side of Long Point Road just past the PEPtNWA entrance sign. Birds showed crisply delineated grey top and white underside, and small dagger-like bill. Distinguished from Red-necked Grebe by much smaller bill, thinner neck, pure white throat and chest, absence of brownish tones in plumage, and lack of colour in bill. Record photo. Horned Grebe have been present for the last several years in small number along the north shore of Long Point from December until mid-January, including at the PEPtNWA lookout. This year they stayed longer, into at least early February. I suspect these two seen today are part of that group and represent the first record of this species overwintering in PEC (although it is possible they are early-returning migrants).
