Shortly after I arrived I heard a 'twit..twit..twit.." call that I initially thought might have been a Bewick's Wren; but it was clearly different and coming from high in the trees and I realized it was a crossbill. Thanks to Lance Benner's recent heads-up message about an apparent incursion of Type 4 crossbills, I had recently reviewed crossbill call types on-line and realized this was indeed a Type 4 ("Douglas Fir") call type. The bird moved east and across the street to the south but continued to call frequently. I got some poor recordings on my phone video which Lance Benner kindly made into the audio file which is attached here. I was never able to see the perched calling bird, but around 0800 it flew, along with a second crossbill, to the east continuing well away from the park. I would stress that the Type 4 flight calls are readily distinguished from our "expected" Type 2 birds, as well as the occasional Type 3. To my ear the call was 'twit..twit.." If my recordings pass scrutiny this might represent the first Los Angeles County record of this call type, but perhaps not unexpected this year given the wide dispersal of this type in many parts of the continent. Lance has confirmed that the calls match Type 4 Red Crossbill.
