Man! This bird made me work for it! Initially heard calling from the opposite side of the ravine giving "whit" notes. I knew from that this would be a good empid. I spent fifteen minutes trying and failing to get a look at this bird. Around a half hour later, I tried to access the ravine from a different angle. This put me slightly closer to the bird, and after ten minutes of waiting from the new angle, I eventually got a quick look at the bird. This look allowed me to see enough field marks to rule out Gray Flycatcher. I'm primary basing this ID off of a few field marks that exclude the other species, as I never saw the bird from the back and never got a look at the primary projection. First it was vocalizing with "whit" notes, which rules out PSFL and more importantly, HAFl which says "pip". I got a okay look at the head, and though the lower mandible was orange, the bill was small/medium in length, the forehead angle was fairly steep and not shallow, and there was a pretty bold, messy eyering. All of these field marks should rule out GRFL, leaving DUFL as the only option.
