Gözlem detayları
Vocally distinct but visually similar to Plain Martin but for very bright white underparts and grey cast to brownish upperparts. Nesting at 3100m in roadside bank alongside Black Saawing, with a second colony 1.5km further up the road at the same altitude. The trill is an alarm call which was given by many of the birds present as we stood next to the nest colony. Totally different to the alarm calls given by birds at a colony in the central Rift near Suswa (see ML549607811) which are normal alarm calls for Plain Martin. A few other call types also given, including short squeaky song with soft terminal click, given when perched. These birds would appear to be the same as the type recently posited as a distinct species in Ethiopia. Gedeon, K. & Topfer, T. 2021.Is there an undescribed martin (Hirundinidae: Riparia) in Ethiopia? Bulletin of the African Bird Club 28(1): 27-36. Bradley, J. & Ikawa, V. 2023. Kenyan records of an unnamed Riparia martin first discovered in the highlands of Ethiopia. Bulletin of the British Ornithologists’ Club, 143(4): 554-558
