Gözlem detayları
Debi Shearwater had told me that flooded fields along this road were loaded with yellowlegs, and that "there has to be a Ruff in there". She was right. This female was seen at close range (as close as 50 m) for extended periods, foraging in flooded fields on both sides of the road. It was small, much smaller than Greater Yellowlegs, and it even looked a bit smaller overall than the single Lesser Yellowlegs present, in direct comparison. Very bright pinkish-orange legs and feet. All feathers of upperparts with dark brown interiors and fairly broad pale edging that was not as sharply defined as on a juvenile. Fairly large black marks on lowermost greater upperwing coverts. Bill short, shorter than that of a Lesser Yellowlegs, very slightly drooped, mostly dark but slightly paler right at the base. Small area of very pale feathering right on top of the base of the bill contrasted with the darker bill and the darker brown of the head. Dark eye. Foreneck, chin, throat, upper breast, sides, and flanks pale grayish white with dusky brownish mottling. Belly and undertail coverts pure white. Seen as close as 50 m for extended period. Some phone-scoped images are provided here.
