Heard in the parking lot when arriving. Landed in smaller Scots Pine between the parking lot and the dunes. A small group that appeared to split up into groups of three and flew off. Flitting about, giving the same 'chip' flight calls the entire time. Didn't notice another call. Identified Crossbill call type using various resources. Birds of the World doesn't give suggestions for call types in Europe (most resources are for the American numbered call types), but notes that the subspecies type for the UK is Loxia curvirostra curvirostra. Very difficult to figure out the eBird taxonomy for the various call types, especially as Type E is labelled Parakeet, as is Type X. I suspect this is in error - Type E is referred to as the British call type in most of the literature, although it's possible that the Parakeet for Type E comes from the source of the Parakeet call type, which was in Britain (according to https://soundapproach.co.uk/twitching-and-taxonomy/). Chip call noted as Type E (type 1A following Summers 2002) here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_crossbill. Type N6 noted here: https://avesrares.wordpress.com/2021/02/01/crossbill-call-types-in-the-western-palearctic-a-birders-perspective_copy/. This N typing not used on eBird, but N6 conforms to British Type E in spectrograms. Appendices in http://visual-nature.de/Blog/Crossbills/Delimitation%20of%20call%20types%20of%20Common%20Crossbill%20(Loxia%20curvirostra)%20in%20the%20Western%20Palearctic_accepted%20version.pdf very helpful for comparing the different systems for typing - also shows N6 call matching Type E. Sound Approach (https://soundapproach.co.uk/twitching-and-taxonomy/) ultimately the most helpful. All of this is to say that I think these are Red Crossbills and Type E (N6). Note the 4.2~kHz height, single-bandedness, lack of wiggles in the down-curve. etc. I think the audio quality makes it harder to see the flat section on the top of the call which gives the call its pitch. For what its worth, it sounds like Type E based on other recordings I listened to.
