Note lack of chin strap. White flanks not visible as it was actively foraging and body held partial submerged.
Gözlem detayları
Presumably the same bird seen and reported by Kendall and Zac. This was the only loon on the west side of the reservoir, all the Common and 2 Pacific Loons were on the distant far eastern end. Initial right off shore from the campground, then swam out toward the middle, then came back close to shore near the campground, then swam around near the dam, and finally back toward the middle. First thing we noticed was the largish blocky head and larger bill, then while loafing near the middle saw the white flanks, when it came back near we also noted the lack of chin strap. I don't know how reliable the white flanks are as a field mark, but basically they were always visible if the bird was loafing or causally swimming, but when the bird was actively foraging, they were usually not visible, even when surfacing between dives. UBRC reject this bird as an ARLO, consensus was Pacific.
