Bird on right. First winter male.
Gözlem detayları
Rare for date and location. Three Goldeneye-type ducks on the bay to the immediate east of Charwell Point. All were first winter males, edging towards more adult plumage given the late date. The group was perhaps 250 metres away from me. One was immediately identifiable as a Barrow's Goldeneye by the crisp, tear-shaped white mark between its eye and base of bill (in contrast to the rounder spot on the Commons). Subtler features assisting with ID included the stubbier bill on the Barrow's, the sharper angle between the base of bill and forehead on the Barrow's, the nascent dark shoulder spur on the Barrow's, and the darker back and upper-wings on the Barrow's. Also, the darker areas on the Barrow's were blacker than those on the Common (which appeared deep brown), although I am not sure if this is a recognized field mark. Goldeneyes are amongst the wariest of Lake Ontario waterfowl. The group flushed and flew towards the horizon shortly after I first noticed them, without an attempt by me to approach closer. Just before, and as, the birds left, I was able to secure some distant photographs.
