Gözlem detayları
*annual wintering location. Lone individual, not associating with any other shorebirds. Large shorebird, with warm brown tones to plumage, cinnamon tones on breast and especially on underwing and primary bases. Scapulars appeared freshly molted with bold black barring; coverts and tertials more worn and less contrastingly patterned. Finely streaked hind neck and crown, lacking the bolder solid pattern of Whimbrel; white eyering as opposed to eyeline of Whimbrel. And of course, outrageously long bill, dark with a pink base. Legs gray. Shrill, doubled “kereee, kereee!” call given in flight. Allowed for remarkably close approach to within 20 feet, likely trusting its expert camouflage to keep concealed. At times essentially invisible even at moderate range with optics when facing away from us. Watched for the better part of half an hour in total, including the return journey. Extensively photographed.
