Tentative first state record found yesterday by Courtney and Caleb. I went to the coordinates where the wren was initially reported by others (see below for directions). After about 45 minutes of searching a group of us finally located the bird calling a little downhill from the original location. It kept calling for most of the next hour while we attempted, in vain, to get photos. It's very skittish and hard to see, but once it starts calling it's pretty easy to pick out. Call was a dry "chimp" repeated multiple times, which was very obviously different from the surrounding PAWR.Cool bird and amazing find! Crappy recording tba... Although my binocular views of the bird were limited to a few seconds, it's worth noting that it had a considerably paler breast and supercilium than I've ever seen on our local Pacific Wrens. These field marks, in combination with the call, make it a very good candidate for Winter Wren. Directions: Once at the oak creek parking turn right up the narrow, muddy, mountain bike trail that goes uphill directly after the gate. Keep going uphill (probably less than 1/2 of a mile) until you reach a dead-end logging road. The wren was actively calling a little to the northwest of and downhill from the dead-end.
