Robins were streaming north up the main road in the park 674 at dawn. My son and I stood just southwest of the visitor/registration center on the Long Way Home trail. We watched robins and waxwings stream north up the canyon. The robins were flying very low, from 15 to >50 feet above the ground. In most cases, the robins were streaming just above the pinyons and junipers, sometimes seeming to almost collide into us. We could see robins streaming by at the bottom of the valley all the way up to the top of the western ridge as well as the eastern ridge. The bulk of the passage was between 710-730 am, although robins continued to stream by after sunrise. At several points in time between 710-730 am, I looked southward and counted the number of robins passing by within my immediate field of view (~100 ft). On average, 40 birds per 10 seconds would pass through my field of view, amounting to ~4,800 passing through within 20 minutes. Extrapolating across the valley, resulted in ~90,000-100,000 passing through the valley in 20 minutes (the valley is about 2000 ft wide). I know that this number sounds almost unbelievable, but I suspect that the actual total number of birds passing through was more than that if one were to count the flux after sunrise .
