Found by Alan and Ann Doty; bird associated with a junco flock visiting their yard feeders. Consults with Gus van Vliet and Patty Rose along with the Dotys determined the bird to be a Purple Finch, female type, eastern race. Gus very helpful in describing characters of the eastern form. The bird had a very bright, broad, white supercillium above the dark auricular patch, which would be much less distinct in the western form. The wings exhibited rather long primary projection, better matching eastern form; the culmen of the dark, conical stubby bill appeared almost straight, again better matching eastern form, and underneath the bird was quite white with rather bold, dark streaking, although my picture really doesn't show that well. The back was noticeably streaked, which would be more subdued in the western form.
