Gözlem detayları
Seen from parking area of Tranquil Cove day use area while scanning open water. Walked along shore and eventually got to nearest position with sun directly at my back. Overall, a single gray/white bird with dark patch in area of eye, spinning in deeper water with a small chop. Bill appeared fine, but not as fine as a Wilson's, and not as long, being close to one head width. Back entirely pale gray, being close to or possibly a lighter shade of gray than a Ring-billed Gull, or as pale as the mantle of an adult Herring Gull. The upper back was seen well in good light on several spins, and that part of the back was continuous with the same shade of gray. There was no streaking seen in the upper or mid-back. The primaries were dark to blackish. Down the nape of the neck was a narrow diffuse dark vertical bar that flared a bit at the base of the neck and stopped. It appeared to be a part of the crown of the heard. Clear bright white was in the facial, neck, breast, and vent areas. A black patch behind the eye also included the eye. The bill size and dark, black eye patch eliminates Wilson's. The very pale gray back eliminates Red-necked, which in all of my experiences not only have darker backs than this Phalarope Seen here today, but Red-necked have streaks on their backs creating lines of contrast. I'd also mention that this bird seemed larger at the distance seen than a Red-necked would have appeared, although that point might be somewhat arguable. This is third record for Klamath County that I am aware of, with one seen at White Lake, Lower Klamath NWR, many years ago, and the first being seen at Crescent Lake, October, 1982.
