potential nest site
Gözlem detayları
Following up on observations yesterday, 6 May, by Chris Robinson and Emily Pence, who had noted Peregrine visiting possible nest site. When I arrived, the male was circling over the river and above the old Scott Paper mill site. First seen at 14:01 and lost as it circled higher and off to the ESE at 14:06. At 14:31 I saw the male swoop in and land on left hand pipe of three sticking out of concrete wall below a three-story section of building with seven windows across. This is left, or upstream, of the dark rusty and short vent stack At 14:33 male flies to west side of river and perches mid-height in trees lining river (video). He watches Osprey circling above, calls a few times, and then I notice that the female perched above him much higher near the top of the trees (tallest along stretch; her perch below what would be canopy maybe 15-20’ from top). Male calls and then flies up to female; they call a few times; he lands briefly near her but then quickly flies off. 14:45 female still perched high and spends time preening. 15:15 female flies down to pipes and enters open area at left side (upriver) the small cave-like area where the pipes emerge from the concrete wall as described above. She spends time preening then lowering herself and spreading wings. As she does this, she picks at the surface with her beak and picks up and drops a few bits of concrete pebbles. At one point she faces outward and almost seems to be in egg-laying position, squatting forward, head down and forward, rear raised, but this subsides and normal postures resume. Hard to say what she was doing, but she could have simply been in a cowering position and looking out at the gulls flying over the river. 15:55 female comes out of "cave" and stands on pipe; male calls from perch on west side of river. 15:59, female flies west across river and perches mid-height in trees, about where male was initially. The male has been perched high in trees during the females visit to the "cave," but at 16:02 male flies down and enters “cave,” inspects floor and picks at gravel bits with partial prostrate pose with wings spread. 16:04 male hops out of "cave" and onto pipe. I left shortly afterward and did not follow birds. Given the female appeared to modify and work the substrate as if making a scrape for nesting, this might be classified as NB (nest building). Both birds visited the inside area that can certainly be presumed to be visiting a probable nest site. There were no eggs visible, and neither bird appeared to incubate. This pair clearly is interested in this site, which I think was used (presumably by the same birds) last year. It being early May, this pair either lost their eggs or are very late in trying to lay. NOTE: I am using the P code here because the pair use the Waterville side for their activities. The potential nest site, however, is in the adjacent Winslow block, and I have coded that N (visiting potential nest site) in an "incomplete" list here.
