A Northern Fulmar grooming its chick on the nest. Northern Fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) are large petrels – and are the only petrel species in the Atlantic Arctic. The name Fulmar comes from Old Norse and means “Foul Gull” – an allusion to its habit of spraying its noxious stomach oil as a defence against predators. A pair of Fulmars were nesting on a low cliff at Borgarfjörður Eystri in eastern Iceland. One of the adults is seen here grooming the single large chick on the nest. Elevation: 8 m. Date added to IBC: July 2, 2018.
