Gözlem detayları
A good-sized flock was seen feeding and constantly calling in pines along Trail #1 in the north northwest section of the trail near 32.87067457,-116.46378148 . They were seen at roughly the same location along Trail #1 on the way to and returning from the cattle watering trough area along Trail #6, which yielded no grosbeaks or crossbills during the time we were there. This was possibly due to the cold and quite windy conditions at this spot, availability of water sources from other areas resulting from recent rains, or possibly the birds were still too busy feeding after being hunkered down for 3 days of storm weather. Males had a striking dark brown head and throat, with a warm yellow stocky body with bright yellow "eyebrows" and large palish gray bill; blackish outer wings with bright white inner wings (largely secondaries) that flashed when taking off, and in flight; and black forked tails with white wing spots. Females/immatures overall paler, with no "eyebrow" pattern. Easily located by following their almost constant pee-er calls (both explosive and softer versions), and also occasional breet calls. Recording and photos to follow. Age/ sex composition roughly estimated.
