Gözlem detayları
I was conducting a sea watch from the end of the pier when I noticed a booby flying in from the southeast. It was less than 100 meters out and as it came even with the pier it circled back coming in slightly toward the pier, then continued north along the shoreline. This bird had a typical booby shape, with long narrow wings and long pointed bill and tail. The head and upper parts were mostly dark brown (including the wings and tail), with a noticeable small white patch on the nape and a slightly larger white patch on the lower back, and a whitish base to the tail which was otherwise dark brown. The under parts of the body were white, and the under sides of the remiges were brown, while the under wing coverts were mostly white with a darker bar through the middle of the white along the axis of the wing. The bill and facial skin and the legs and feet all appeared to be a dull grayish color. There was a rather heavy marine layer this morning, so lighting conditions were not ideal, but still good enough to obtain the photos below. There has been a major incursion of Blue-footed Boobies into southern California during the past few days.
