Gözlem detayları
Observed in the vicinity of the two large cypress trees above the New Island Settlement during a bird walk. A medium-sized pale flycatcher, that perched out in the open and was wary (i.e. disappeared) when approached (closest observation was 120 meters or more). Black-and-white plumage with a proportionately long tail. Bill black and appeared proportionately wide. Face white with a large white supercillium - especially above the bill on the forehead (thus reducing the size of the black crown) - very unique. Contrasting blackish cap and conspicuous eyeline (auricular). Otherwise underparts white to the under tail coverts. Tail black and slightly forked; appeared to have light edges the on the outer tail feather -- tail was often spread (expressed) while perched. Upperparts and wing gray-brown. Wing coverts with broad white edges (bars or panels). In flight, the base of the primaries showed extensive white bases that formed a conscious white stripe in flight. The observation was rather brief - after losing sight of the bird when it took flight we seach the area surrounding the cypress and along the track back to the landing without seeing the bird again. Fortunately, Jack Jeffrey photographed the bird during the initial observation before it disappeared. An internet search indicates that this may constitute only the second record for the Falklands - the first by Alan Henry in 2005 on one of the "outer islands".
