Half the size of a mallard, all dark bill, bold army-green colored speculum with wide white borders (not an immatue female bird), anterior white border to speculum is as wide as trailing edge (not a female bird), gray colored secondary coverts, tertials are dark with light edging, scapulars are starting to lengthen, face is generally diffuse (only distinctive marking is short eye stripe extending posterior to eye and short auricular marking, area before the eye is very diffuse ) supercilium is not bold and distinctive, but is diffuse in color, pale spot at bill base is minimal in size, white in chin and belly are not well developed. Short legged in stature, waddled with a very strong side to side manner. When swimming "pumped" its head in manner of a coot. Appears to be a first year male bird.
