NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 12. Bulk reel: 369; wings, alarm call. Weather: fair. *same general area as Cut 11), several hours later. 1 bird. "Croak" type voice but calls repeated irregularly and therefore seems to be in a different context from the normal "croak call". Also various loud calls and "crows". The other calls at times evolve into "chatter" and at times have the rhythm of the "standard phrasing" of marail (see Cut 5). This, together with the "crows", sees to establish the identity of this bird fairly well as marail. [continued on separate page:] I don't know what prompted these sounds. There could be an element of "alarm" in them, perhaps the bird was aware of my presence. I then tried to see the bird which was some 50m from me in the forest, up in the tall trees. When I arrived almost under where it was, without my having been able to see it, it flew away over the trees. I could see only that it was a cracid and had a "rounded" tail. There was apparently only 1 bird present. Length: 3'26'. Quality: 1-2. Level: +5. Parabola: yes. Note - 14/II/68 - Comparing this now with granti cuts 1/8, I feel there is no doubt that the sounds of this cut belong to marail. PAS [another short note with this data record is illegible. mf].
