A continuing bird, I think. One was reported here two days ago, and there are other eBird reports from this fall. Today, it took a while, but I eventually found him in a eucalyptus-looking tree along the edge of the park, roughly southeast of the playground. This tree had a thick trunk that was totally riddled with sapsucker wells. This was an adult male with a vibrant red crown and throat, two bold white stripes on the face, and a hint of red on the nape. There was a bit of a black border to the throat at the base of the bill, but it doesn't extend far and certainly wasn't complete. No obvious signs of hybridization. I have now seen all four sapsuckers in Los Angeles county.
