NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 3. Bulk reel: 211; piping; piping, wings; Extra cut length: 6:05. Weather: clear (moon). Notes: Starts with whistled song. Note the vocal reaction when another bird gives wing-whirr display. Near end can hear the bird fly to a new position, then give another whistle. it gave a wing-whirr then but unfortunately the recorder was turned off while I was trying to focus on the bird's new position. Then a voice commentary indicating this sp. is today displaying 15-30 minutes earlier than in past days, perhaps because of moon (full moon 15/1/68); also indicates a period of considerable displaying by P. granti at 1:00AM (~4KM) up road (= to South). Bird collected. Length: 7'12". Quality: 1-2. Level: +14. (Paper Spacer) b) Time: 535 (voice note on tape is in error). Notes: Now focussed on bird that was whistling in above. It stopped whistling and gave displays, but started whistling again when I got back on it. Note again its reaction to a nearby wing-whirr. After more whistling it gave a display of its own. The delay between its last whistle * and the display was only about 10". It seems quite obvious that the bird gave the initial clap just as it jumped (* or flew?) up from perch (continued on next page) *It's not clear from the recording whether the sound preceding the clap is "flight" or, as I think may be, shaking of foliage or scraping of bird's feet as it 'jumped'. Length: 5'52". Quality: 1-2. Level: +14. c) I then played back that display several times and bird came a bit closer. I was able to record 1 whistle sone and a display. Again it's obvious that the first clap came just as the bird jumped (*or flew?) from perch. It glided to another tree, a short flight. (Voice comment re this.) Length: ~52". Quality: 1. Level: +1-. I then played back that song and display. Bird came over near to me and perched, visible in a tree. I played it again ~2 times and after some delay (~1.5', not all saved) it gave a display, again quite clearly giving initial clap *just after* leaving perch, (it sailed between 1st clap and start of display.) (It took off in my direstion, obviously having tied down the "rival" noise.) then sailed toward me, curving around as it got over me and alighted in a dead tree at my side. I then collected it.
