Примечания

Frenzied calls after the first young left the nest. Adults calling to each other and young calling as they moved from the roof to the wooded lot. There was also a black snake creeping around, so not sure if some of these calls were about that threat.

Подробности наблюдения

The Travis and Taylor nest box was a bit too exciting tonight. At 7pm I saw the first young fledge from the nest, flying on top of our roof, parents very vocal and zipping around to contain them. Parents appeared to lead it across the roof to the trees/garden lot next door. I continued to watch as at least two other young threatened to leap. My cats at the open window then alerted me to a black snake crawling towards the box. I ran out and shooed it away with a broom and went back to watching. A young house sparrow fluttered around the box as the young scolded, then a coppers hawk came flying in after the sparrow! I went outside and the coopers flew off rapidly up the street. Back inside I waited while the young in the box called for their folks. Taylor came back at 7:55, landing on the box, calling then back towards the roof. Travis flew in at 8:07 with food. Taylor came at 8:13 and carried off a fecal sack. No more activity, so at least 2 young still in the box. Greased the bird pole with vasoline in case the snake comes back.
