Amazing bird. Observed in a stand of large conifer trees. Very hostile toward our group of 4 mountain bikers; calling and swooping down over our heads repeatedly. Probably protecting a nearby nest. Much larger than a Cooper's Hawk. Features of the bird include a black eye stripe, reddish eye, white eyebrow, black cap, light gray and streaked breast, conspicuous white under-tail coverts, dark gray above, broad wings and tail with some barring, and tail somewhat squared off at the end. The photos are from an iPhone so the quality is poor.
