Strangely enough, if we discount the unassailable Golden Plover, the bird of the day was very probably this humble but incredibly pretty little character, a bird I’d simply written off ever seeing properly since the last viewing I had all the way back in 2015 at Capertee!!! We really didn’t have to go far before we had success; the bubbly, pleasant song was very clear to hear… and then, there it was!! It fluttered into a little stand of trees up amongst the boulders, where it proceeded to show absolutely perfectly in the dead branches, lively and alert, flicking its wings and fanning its tail in a way quite unlike any other bird I’ve seen before… while the doll-like proportions were very beautiful, with that liquid-black dot of an eye, the thing I particularly loved about the Warbler was the fact that, for all intents and purposes, it was a perfectly tiny replica of a Song Thrush, with mellow tones of cream and brown, with beautiful black brush-stroke dapples across its front… throw in the swarming Yellow Thornbills and Golden Whistlers joining it, and the absolutely gorgeous burnt glow of the sunset, and it was an absolutely unforgettable moment of birding; genuinely and sincerely pleasant stuff!!
