UPDATE 14 Nov 2023: Tim Spahr confirms these are all Type 3. ------------------- Group of 8 flew into alder in center of garden. After hearing vocalizations that seemed suggestive of crossbills, but not completely convinced because of their softness. i thought maybe calls while perched not same as flight calls? Unable to see the birds because they were on the opposite side, I walked around. Noticed quickly that there were at least 4 crossbills, male and female. Decided to try to photograph first but they flew out towards taller trees. Gave up and opened voice memo app on phone to record sound as the group vocalized. First group was joined by similar sized group in flight, together calling with many calls nearly overlapping. Flock flew far north out of range toward golf course. I was able to individually observe three of the birds in the alder more closely with binoculars; crossed tips of bill were prominent. Preliminary impression is dryer softer sound of Type 3. A few notes early in the recording show well enough to suggest Type 3, but ambient equipment noise become prominent and the spectrogram isn't very clear, but the strongest part of the note - left to right downward looks best for Type 3. There are several finch-like phrases and notes that seem not to be crossbill flight calls in the first few seconds of the recording, along with the type 3 call. Only what seem to be Type 3 calls are heard from the larger group -- middle to end
