Подробности наблюдения
Rare but annual visitor to Lake Champlain amongst large concentrations of scaup. Somewhat surprisingly, this appears to be the first record of Tufted Duck at this well established hotspot. This particular individual appeared to be a juv/imm male sporting the very beginnings of a tuft, with short wispy feathers emerging from its crown. I carefully considered hybrid as I find them equally as fascinating, but could only determine supportive features for pure Tufted Duck. I first picked out the bird by the disorganized feathers on the top of its head. I watched it for a total of 10-15 minutes, observing it at all angles and directly adjacent to many individual scaup for comparison. First, the bird was markedly smaller overall than the nearby Greater Scaup, and even appeared runtier than nearly Lesser Scaup. The bird was clearly and consistently smaller than all of the scaup in its vicinity. The bird’s back was uniform dark throughout, not jet black as seen on a breeding drake Tufted Duck but notably dark throughout lacking any hints of the paler grayish tones as seen on scaup. While the bird kept its head tucked back for most of the observation period, I had excellent of views of its head and bill when it momentarily picked its head up and paddled nervously with the scaup further out into the lake. The bird completely lacked any white at the bill base and its overall dainty size was even more emphasized. Head shape appeared uniformly rounded. Distant digiscope images attached.
