*high count; evening roost count as massive numbers of Forest Wagtails descended into the mangroves. I first noticed them when scanning at a distance and I saw a flock of dispersed passerines, with medium builds and medium-length tails, that I thought were flying like pipits. Since there are no regular flocking pipits in Phuket (only Australasian), I rushed over thinking they could be Red-throated Pipits and knowing they’d be calling to help with the ID. When I arrived I spotted passerines overhead with strong wingstripes visible from below and I had the brief thought that they might be minivets, since I had groups of Ashy Minivet here before. But I quickly realized they were too short in the tail and flew differently and these were the “pipits”. There were easily 100 in the air at that moment and more were arriving from several directions. They were calling a lot so I got audio and took some photos in the fading light. Almost all dropped in between 18:40 and 18:50 and during that time two large flocks circled around allowing for accurate estimates of 400 and 250, and at least 250 others were counted dropping into the mangroves. This represents a high count for Thailand in eBird, with 50 in Kaeng Krachan (is that an accurate number?) being the next highest count. See also the roost departure count from the following morning (3420), which set a global high count for eBird, approached only by two counts from Sri Lanka: 1000 on 31 Jan 2003 from Monaragala https://ebird.org/checklist/S95778280 and 1716+ on 24 Mar 2022 from Gampaha https://ebird.org/checklist/S105473271. It is not clear to me if these large roosts occur mostly on passage (suggested by the 24 Mar count) or year-road (note the 1000 in late Jan). Notably the Sri Lanka flights occur with Yellow Wagtails but this one has no other passerines involved, only bee-eaters.
