NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 6. good cut; Bulk reel: 57; Extra cut(s) on bulk reel: 58; Extra cut length: 9:25 B I heard a pair singing about 40 m. from the road. I then played the "hoots" of Cut 5. The result was that one bird (high voice?, must check) started to sing in the trees overhead. After a while, from some low trees right by my side, came a startling scream. This, unfortunately, occurred at a moment that the recorder was not running, but I believe it was probably the other bird of the pair. Quality: 1-2 & 1. Level: +5. a) 8:00 to 9:00 PM. The first recordings are of the single bird. Then after some playback of the recorded song there are more recordings of a single bird. This sounds different and may be the other bird. Then the pair sings. One bird has a high voice, the other a low voice. The best recordings of this are in the final section (138 tape and preceding part of 71 m tape). ~ equal focus on both birds. b) 9:30 PM. The birds finally tired of the playback and flew into the cacaotolos, where I heard them sing. Then they became silent. Then I heard a pair sing ~ 50 m. up the road; I don't know if it's the same pair. I went there and recorded them, focus on low-voiced bird. Another low-voiced bird is heard in background (as well as the high-voiced bird of the subject pair). The low-voiced bird in focus was collected and proved to be a male. The recording then continues on the high-voiced bird, first very shortly after collecting, then about 20 min. later. It could not be brought into view for collecting although it reacted to the playback by flying back and forth. However, it always alighted well hidden by the foliage.
