The flushed second bittern before it landed.
Подробности наблюдения
*Scarce migrant. Very surprised to find two birds. Originally looking from the road at the Georgia Lane overview I saw no bitterns. Noticing a small path leading down to the marsh, I decided to follow it and see if I could scan a more complete area. Upon getting there, I finally found one of the American Bitterns standing like all bitterns, in Tyne reeds upright and still. I walked a bit further to the left on the path (now more like a peninsula) to get a better view, and all of a sudden flushed another American Bittern from the edge of the path! Very surprising! I captured some in-flight photos of it before it relocated in the marsh, and got some shots of the one closer to me standing still. Upon getting back to the road, I was able to locate both bitterns again, and took digiscopes of both. Overall brown heron-like birds, cream stripes on neck, and long dagger-like bill. Photos.
