Подробности наблюдения
3rd Missouri state record, first observed in mid-October per homeowner. Bird came in to feed at heated feeder three times, for about 5, 3, and 3 min. Basically a small hummingbird, dull green above and whitish to grayish-white below. Very similar to a female Ruby-throat, but the following characters visible in photos are suggestive (not totally diagnostic) of Black-chinned: (1) Rather long bill, slightly decurved toward tip; (2) gray crown from center forward, becoming dull green toward nape; (3) very light gray auricular patch contrasting only slightly with white throat and spot behind eye (would be more contrasty in Ruby-throat); (4) tail and primaries of similar length; white tail spots seem mostly worn off, thus full tail might be slightly longer, but Ruby-throat's tail should be distinctly longer. (5) Upperparts a mixture of messy green and gray tones; Ruby-throat likely to look brighter green. DIAGNOSTIC points: (1) 5th photo shows bluntly rounded, club-like shape of P10 (narrower and pointed in Ruby-throat); and (2) 6th photo shows inner primaries with slightly rounded tips (sharply pointed in Ruby-throat). Note also that these inner primaries are narrow and closely spaced, indicating Archilochus and ruling out other genera. Further note: P7 seems to be missing on bird's left side (apparent in photos 5 and 6 and other observers' flight shots).
