Подробности наблюдения
Identified as Red-backed Shrike x Red-tailed (a.k.a. Turkestan) Shrike hybrid per Pyle et al. 2015 (North American Birds 69[1]:4-35). They couched this conclusion with a caveat, "We cannot rule out an introgressed individual of three or more species from the Altai region of southern Russia, and for this and other reasons an alternate conclusion would leave the parental make-up of the Mendocino shrike, other than involving Red-backed Shrike, as indeterminable given current knowledge. However, given especially the wing and tail morphologies and the sizes of potential source populations, a hybrid between Red-backed and Turkestan Shrike seems most likely." Chuck Vaughn, local eBird reviewer, later instructed me that due to this uncertainty, the bird would only be accepted as "shrike sp." I made the change accordingly in October 2023. Singing softly. I recorded some audio with my shotgun microphone but the recording was pretty poor due to loud wind and ocean noise plus lots of foreground birds singing over the shrike in the background.
