Courtship feeding call; Recordist's Note: "Live laboratory mice were being released in the owl's flight cage on a daily basis starting in mid March. It took the owl about a month to develop a proficiency for catching them. On April 3, 1973, I was standing in the flight cage after releasing a live laboratory mouse and watched the owl catch and kill it. The owl then flew to a perch and I turned to leave. As I placed my hand on the door of the cage the owl started to call, using the same chittering call (with a slightly different quality) it used to protest the handling. I turned to look at the owl and it was very obvious that it was excited. It then flew and lit on top of the black broad billed cap I was wearing. It carried the mouse in its bill and as it uttered this chittering call it dangled the dead mouse along the edge of the bill of the cap. I then reached up and gently took hold of the mouse. The owl continued to call and hold onto the mouse for about another ten to fifteen seconds. It then dropped the mouse into my hand and flew to its perch. This episode was not recorded."
