NOTES: Behavior accompanying vocalization: perched in his cage; When not vocalizing bird was flying back and forth in his cage; Deep booming call. This young Owl was picked up on June 27, 1973 and was about 7 months old when it started calling. The first calls were heard in late January of 1974. Location of the Great Gray Owl nest: Nelson's Clear Creek off the Salchaket Slogh of the Tanana River South wear from Fairbanks, Alaska. Lat 64¡44', Long. 147¡53'. This bird was found on the ground near a nest of the Great Gray Owl where both parents had been shot by hunters. It was estimated that this bird was approximately 2 weeks old when it was picked up. It was hand raised and held in captivity for 13 months, then released. Before being released it was taught to capture its own food. When this owl was released, it remained close to the house for 3 days before it wandered off. It returned 4 days later to feed and remained for 2 days. It then disappeared and remained away for 6 days before returning to spend 2 more days feeding. This was the last time that it was seen near its cage. This owl remained in a square mile area near where it was raised for 2 months before it disappeared. The size and actions of this bird indicated that it was probably a male. The bird was over 9 months old at the time of the recording.
