Подробности наблюдения
This bird first appeared yesterday and was identified as Selasphorus sp. After sifting through hundreds of photos looking for some that might show any of the published clues used to separate the two nearly identical species, Rufous and Allen's Hummingbird, I am fairly confident that this is a Rufous. Many of the field marks are extremely subtle. Allen's trademark pin-shaped R5 feather only occur in the adult male. So being an imm bird adds to the identification difficulty. I believe it is an imm male. Separating the two species is all in the tail feathers, particularly their shapes. The slight dent in the lateral vein of R2 seems to be the only diagnostic indication of a Rufous instead of Allen's at this age.
