Sweet!! Southbound shearwater picked up north of West Point at 06:59am and watched for 5 minutes as it passed well within the yellow buoy before turning a bit southwest, disappearing to the south. Dark shearwater with well-defined light flashes on its underwings (palest in its primary coverts), a bill which seemed relatively long, and the bird seemed sizeable and with a head shape, ‘neck’, and tail length that I believe all fit better for Sooty Shearwater than for Short-tailed. Timing is better for Sooty, with no Short-tailed records on eBird anywhere in the Salish Sea between March 10th and August 15th. Photos here are screengrabs from a digiscope video. Observed with birder Brian Lukas. My first Sooty Shearwater in Washington and in King, and my first tubenose in the Sound this year!
