NOTES: (Backgrnd: Deschutes River; Sound Delivery Rate: Sporadic; General Climate: Wet; Cover Den: Open; Format: 1/2 TRK stereo; Noise Reduction: Dolby B 1C; Bias: metallic; Equalization Type IV,70US) To -18db. Rebecca Goggans, MA, Phd candidate under habitat advisory contract with USDI Fish & Wildlife asked if Mrs. Ward and I could tape this species now under her studies. We spent night at her home about 1/2 hour drive from above location, arriving about 4:30am standard time. Birds were heard drumming at irregular times. We spent an hour pursuing and hoping to get closer until obtaining this tape. Bird then left, and we heard no more, except briefly from a Black-backed, which we could not tape. No vocalizations heard from either species. See also: USGS Crane Prairie Reservoir, Oregon Quad 1963. BNA: Drumming is heard throughout the recording. CZ 26/02/2004 [Twenty-two examples of the Drum (two of which are incomplete). These appear to represent the "Fast Drums" of BNA. Quality changed from 3-2 to 3-2, 2 (much hiss, especially in the first part - BEST part is between 1:15 and 2:28) - CAM - 21 April 2005]. Other Behaviors: Bill Drumming, Advertise. Habitat: Forest, Freshwater, Coniferous Forest, Montane Grassland, Riparian.
