This juvenile Broad-winged Hawk was initially spotted by Julie Szabo and photographed by Curtis A. Marantz on 17 September 2016 over the Lake Tamarisk Golf Course, Desert Center, Riverside County, California.
Подробности наблюдения
Julie initially spotted this bird as it flew in from the desert to the north of the golf course, but it then flew directly overhead and continued to the southeast before circling and gaining altitude, before eventually disappearing to the east in alternating flapping and gliding flight. When I first saw this bird, I quickly attempted to take photos, so my views when the bird was at its closest point were quite superficial, but I did study it through my scope as it circled to the south at a greater distance. Not surprisingly this bird never called. Given the brevity of my views of this bird at close range compared with my photos I suspect far more detail should be visible in the latter than I was able to see in the field. Upon initially seeing this bird, I immediately noticed that it was a small hawk that flew with rapid wing-beats alternating with short glides in a manner that seemed more like an Accipiter than a Buteo. I noted pretty quickly both that the body was too plump and the wings were too broad at the base for an Accipiter, and shortly later I saw the distinctive underwing pattern of this species. Closer inspection revealed a plump body and a rounded head that extended only a short way in front of the leading edge of the wings. I also noted that the wings were broad-based and with a bulge in the secondaries before tapering through the primaries to a more narrowly rounded wingtip. The tail extended behind the trailing edge of the wings a distance somewhat longer than the head extended in front of the wings, and it was often flared and when flared it was weakly rounded. When seen from below, this bird was primarily an off-whitish to creamy-buff color throughout the underwings apart from having a narrow yet well-defined frame of blackish that extended through the primaries and along the trailing edge of the wings. The body appeared to be more whitish overall, but also with dark blotches that appeared to extended down the sides and along they flanks, and with the blotches seemingly larger on the flanks. The underside of the tail was generally pale, but with a relatively broad, dark band subterminally and two or three additional bands basal to the broad band that were narrow and relatively inconspicuous. I also have a much clearer memory of the broad band and suspect I recall the narrower bands primarily from brief glances at my photos of this bird. The head appeared to be dark brown apart from a narrowly paler throat, and I have no recollection of seeing dark malar-stripes or any pattern in the face. I thought this bird was more evenly dark brown across the upperparts and wings than a Red-tailed Hawk, but the pattern and coloration were both unremarkable. The upperside of the tail appeared slightly paler than the back, and even from above I noted at least some suggestion of a darker subterminal-band, but little additional detail. My views of this bird at close range were too brief to notice any of the soft-part colors.
