Подробности наблюдения
Single bird made a very close pass of the mole at approx 0820, heading north. Initially seen head on heading towards observer from the south, drew attention initially due to whitish belly. Approached within less than 50m of the mole before heading west to round the mole, then continuing away to the north-west. Excellent views as it passed close to the mole, upperparts grey-blackish, with blackish cap, paler grey mantle and innerwing, and weak blackish “M” across upperwings extending onto inner trailing edge concolorous with rump and tail. Underparts mostly white, with blackish trailing edge to underwing, outer primaries and bold carpal bar extending well onto the inner wing. Bill short and blackish, head with blackish cap, paler grey collar and white lores and throat. Size impression was approximately similar to Wedge-tailed Shearwaters but not seen in direct comparison. Flight relatively relaxed gliding, remaining low to the water throughout and not wheeling higher as Wedge-tailed Shearwaters frequently did. Likely the same bird was subsequently reported by Heather Thorning, with accompanying photographs, as having been present off Woodman Point for an extended period earlier in the morning before heading north around 0800
