Continuing rarity. Great close views! Mahalo to Kristen Nalani for reporting on Hawaii Birdwatching Facebook page! Well documented by others. Small brown duck, less than half the size of nearby hybrids. Dark brown back and lighter brown sides. Brown crest makes head appear long and rectangular when lowered. Cheeks grayish-brown. Iris yellow. Long thin bill, mostly dark except for yellowish/orange on lower mandible. Belly pale/cream color w/some brown stains. Long stiff tail held upright. White bars on outer secondaries seen when bird flapped wings. [Update 2/3/2021] - Noticeable black has developed on this birds face, as photographed by Michael Young, and significant white is beginning to appear on it's breast. This appears to be a male bird. First seen in open body of water along trail near signage, then swam upstream towards bridge. Got to see it waddle awkwardly on land. Likes to take naps. Followed it all the way until it was obscured by mud. My 100th Honolulu county bird (not including Blue-crowned Parakeets)!
