Примечания
Spotted Towhee and Orange-crowned Warbler in the background. At the end of the recording, I mistakenly assigned the loud trilling vocalizations as "female", but in reality I have no idea which sex was making the calls - they did appear to be coming from a bird with less elongated head plumes - photos 391 and 411 below.
Подробности наблюдения
Amazingly lucky encounter, my first visual observation of this species after years of birding! I turned a corner and saw two of these quail apparently sunning themselves on a low ridge of dirt and vegetation quite close to the road. While I observed, photographed and recorded them from my car, one of the close birds was making persistent series of high-pitched calls that sounded like trills followed by a couple of slower notes. I am uncertain if these were alarm calls or some other sort of vocalization. I also heard "quark" advertisement calls from one of the close birds and at least one other bird in the distance.
