The piercing calls of male Red-crested Bustards (also known as Korhaans) (Eupodotis ruficrista) are commonly heard in the savannas and semi-deserts of southern Africa. Males call mainly in summer, although sometimes year-round. Their call is bizarre, beginning with a series of accelerating clicks followed by a sequence of notes rising in volume until it becomes painful to hear. This male Red-crested Bustard was confiding, standing on the verge of the road. He began clicking, then called, after which he stretched his wings and expanded his head and neck feathers, partly exposing his red crest.
