Подробности наблюдения
1 adult and 2 Downey young in nest. Nest located about 1 km past Rio Frijoles. 3 feet off ground on top of Amarillo bush out in the open. Near stream. Photos of birds and area. Clearly a quail-dove. Whitish face and forehead with a red/brown cap. Red orbital ring. Orange iris. No strong dark malar stripe. Red bill. Violaceous cast to sides of neck, upper back, scapulars and lesser wing coverts. Purplish/reddish tail. The back color is difficult to describe, and varies somewhat depending on the angle. From some directions looked brownish, and from others looked more greenish or tan. We were with a birding group from the canopy tower lead by Carlos Bethancourt. We ran into a bat researcher who told us that he had found a Ruddy Quail-dove nest nearby while doing nocturnal searches for bats. Intrigued, we asked him to show us the spot. After seeing the bird, we determined that it was in fact a Violaceous Quail-Dove! Here is a photo of the bird on the nest: And here is a photo of the nest site. The nest was in the center of the photo, roughly centered horizontally and 1/3 of the way from the bottom to the top. The bird/nest is visible as a brown blob just above the palm frond and to the left of the narrow tree trunk.
