Подробности наблюдения
A rectrix and a contour (breast?) feather were found on the ground by Kara Sun (no eBird account). I photographed the feathers in the field, and uploaded them to iNaturalist, where an astute observer pointed out they were Oilbird feathers. I confirmed this by comparing the rectrix to reference photos online. This is a very rare bird in this region, and thus it is a record of historical relevance/importance. The bird was most likely feeding the previous night or nights in the large fruiting tree (possible aguacatillo but I'm not certain) that today was attracting several feeding quetzals. The location is at about 1800 meters elevation. Just a few meters from the enormous, thousand year old elm tree. Here is a museum reference for the identification: https://www.featherbase.info/en/species/Steatornis/caripensis.
