Примечания
(3) Black Heron in a canopy posture, looking for fish entering the canopy. As for many other small Ardeidae, the quick wading action is in the case of the Black Egret most probably aimed at stirring up from the bottom mud organisms sought by the egret’s main prey, young Tilapia, which feed in particular on plant-detritus and bacteria associated with this decomposing material. If the quick wading action in itself is insufficient, additional foot-stirring under the canopy may follow to dislodge food for young Tilapia, which would then react by entering the canopy. Apart from the advantage of cutting out reflections, the canopy finally enables the egret to discern immediately any prey entering the canopy from the surrounding lighted water. Elevation: 13 m. Date added to IBC: April 3, 2019.
