A fully-coloured male Variegated Fairy-wren perching in a thorny shrub . The western race of the Variegated Fairy-wren (Malurus lamberti assimilis) is found in coastal scrub, along creek lines and throughout Australia’s arid interior. The males have a brilliant blue head and an iridescent blue “moustache”, while females are grey-brown with reddish feathers running from the beak to the back of the eye. Variegated Fairy-wrens are usually found in family groups, hopping about in dense, shrubby vegetation as they hunt for small insects. This fully-coloured male was perching in a thorny shrub in the Chinaman's Pool Nature Reserve at Carnarvon, Western Australia. Elevation: 7 m. Date added to IBC: September 10, 2019.
