An African Swamphen eating grass seeds . The African Gallinule or African Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio madagascariensis) is a member of a species complex that is found from sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, India, South-east Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The appearance of the individual races varies widely across this huge geographic range, ranging from pale blue and brown body plumage to dark iridescent blues and blacks. This African Swamphen was eating grass seeds in the Wakkerstroom Wetland Reserve in the South African highveld. Elevation: 1748 m. Date added to IBC: April 20, 2019.
