A Grey Butcherbird eating a flying ant. The Grey Butcherbird (Cracticus torquatus) is widely distributed in Australia, occupying a wide range of habitats from arid to temperate zones. Butcherbirds prey on small vertebrates as well as other birds and on insects, and their name relates to their habit of storing prey by impaling it on thorns or sharp twigs.
